TL;DR

  • Tennessee pays 1/26 of the average of your two best quarters, from $55 to $325 a week, the 45th highest maximum of 51.
  • With unemployment at 3.4% (BLS, September 2026), claims run 12 weeks: $3,900 at most.
  • The $55 floor covers everyone whose two best quarters average up to $1,430, so low earners get more than the formula.
  • The waiting week is paid back once you certify four consecutive eligible weeks; part-time pay at or above your benefit stops the check.

How Tennessee Calculates Your Weekly Benefit

The weekly benefit is 1/26 of the average wages in your two highest base-period quarters, with a $55 minimum and a $325 maximum (U.S. DOL, July 2026). TDLWD confirms eligible claims can receive up to $325 a week (TDLWD).

Computed by RemoteLaws, rounded down
Average of two best quarters Formula (avg / 26) Weekly benefit
$780.01 $30.00 $55
$1,200 $46.15 $55
$1,430 $55.00 $55
$2,600 $100.00 $100
$5,200 $200.00 $200
$7,800 $300.00 $300
$8,450 $325.00 $325
$12,000 $461.54 $325

The $55 floor is well above what the formula gives at the eligibility line: $780.01 / 26 is $30. The floor applies until your two best quarters average $1,430, a band where earning more does not raise the check. At the other end, the cap starts at an $8,450 average, about $650 a week of pay.

12 Weeks While Unemployment Stays Low

TDLWD says qualified claimants are limited to 12 weeks a year when the state average unemployment rate is at or below 5.5%, and its eligibility page indexes more weeks to higher rates (Apply for Benefits; Do I Qualify). The two TDLWD pages set the 12-week band differently (5.5% versus 4.5%), but with the rate at 3.4% in September 2026 (BLS) both give 12 weeks. The DOL July 2026 table lists 12 to 20 weeks and notes that weeks also depend on base-period wages (DOL).

Computed by RemoteLaws: 12-week totals
Claim Weekly x 12 weeks
Minimum $55 $660
Two quarters of $5,200 $200 $2,400
Maximum $325 $3,900

Waiting week: unpaid until week 4

Your first certified week is the waiting week. TDLWD pays it only if you certify for, and are eligible for, four consecutive weeks; the fourth payment then covers both weeks (TDLWD). If you find work in week 2 or 3, the waiting week stays unpaid.

The Three Wage Tests

  • Your two highest quarters must average at least $780.01 (TDLWD).
  • Total base-period wages must be more than 40 times your weekly benefit (TDLWD).
  • Wages outside your highest quarter must exceed the lesser of 6 times the WBA or $900 (DOL).

The third test catches seasonal pay: $15,000 in one quarter plus $1,000 elsewhere qualifies ($307 a week), while $15,000 plus $800 does not, because $800 is under $900 (computed).

Part-Time Work and the Cliff

Tennessee disregards the greater of $50 or 25% of your weekly benefit; pay above that reduces the benefit (DOL). A week is partial only if earnings are below the weekly benefit, and TDLWD warns that earning more than your weekly benefit stops your benefits (TDLWD).

Computed by RemoteLaws, rounded down
Gross pay Benefit (WBA $325) Total income
$0 $325 $325
$81 $325 $406
$150 $256 $406
$250 $156 $406
$324 $82 $406
$325 $0 $325
$400 $0 $400

From $81.25 to $324 of pay, total income stays near $406. At $325, the benefit stops: a one-dollar raise costs $81. Below a $200 weekly benefit, the $50 floor is the larger disregard.

Tennessee vs Its Neighbors

Tennessee ranks 45th of 51 on the weekly maximum (DOL). Alabama pays $50 a week less but for 2 more weeks, so its largest claim is only $50 lower. See the Kentucky, Georgia, Alabama and North Carolina guides.

Neighbors (DOL July 2026 and RemoteLaws state guides; computed totals)
State Max weekly Weeks now Largest claim
Tennessee $325 12 $3,900
North Carolina $350 12 $4,200
Alabama $275 14 $3,850
Georgia $365 14 $5,110
Kentucky $746 16 $11,936

Work Search, Appeals and Taxes

  • Work search: at least four job searches or re-employment activities each week, reported on your certification; exceptions for a definite return-to-work date, union hiring hall or approved training (TDLWD).
  • Appeals: within 15 calendar days of the date of the agency decision (TDLWD).
  • Taxes: benefits are taxable on your federal return and reported on Form 1099-G by payment issue date (TDLWD 1099-G).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a Tennessee unemployment calculator?

$325 a week. At the current 12-week duration, the largest possible claim is $3,900.

How many weeks of unemployment can you get in Tennessee?

12 weeks while the state unemployment rate stays low; it was 3.4% in September 2026. More weeks apply only if the rate rises.
